With support from local partners like Makerere University’s AirQo, we are implementing community education and awareness campaigns focusing on road transport services to mobilize local communities around the value of clean air and road safety. These initiatives enable access to and interpretation of available data while providing actionable and affordable steps to reduce transport-related pollution, improve respiratory health, and promote road safety.
Our engagement prioritizes motorists and automobile-related workers in the Kampala metropolitan area, aiming to raise awareness about road safety, pollution, and their associated health and environmental impacts. Through behavioral changes and up-skilling, we emphasize the use of proper materials and spare parts, empowering communities to understand the link between their actions and global issues like air pollution and climate change. Communities are selected based on the density of automobile repair garages, particularly in makeshift settings.
Our process includes mobilization with community leaders, focus group discussions, and tailored training workshops. We partner with local mechanics to provide free training, resources, and support around sustainable maintenance and computerized diagnostics to enhance their ability to reduce emissions and improve road safety. The aim is to uphold the integrity of inbuilt safety and emissions control systems while transitioning away from fossil fuels over time. To date, we have engaged over 1,500 local mechanics, with a target of reaching at least 5,000 in the next three to five years.
